The U.S. Space Force has significantly increased the ceiling of its National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 contract from $5.6 billion to $17 billion. This adjustment reflects a substantial rise in the military's projected satellite launch needs.
The contract, which runs through fiscal 2029, involves seven companies, including SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, competing for launch task orders. The Lane 1 contract is designed for missions that do not require the extensive certification and mission-assurance procedures of more complex military satellites. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to accommodate the growing demand for satellite launches, as evidenced by the identification of 25 additional Phase 3 Lane 2 missions beyond the initially planned 54 launches over five years.
