What's Happening?
The governments of Laos and France have initiated two programs aimed at enhancing climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable landscapes. These initiatives are supported by a 6 million euro grant from the French government through the Agence Française
de Développement (AFD). The programs, set to run from 2025 to 2027, are being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in Laos. The first program, Promoting Climate-Resilient Irrigation, is led by the Department of Irrigation with technical support from Ginger SOFRECO and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). The second program, Building Long-term Climate-resilient Agriculture and Landscapes in the Lao PDR (LTS), is managed by the Department of Planning and Cooperation with assistance from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in Laos. These efforts are part of a broader national strategy to strengthen climate resilience in agriculture, addressing challenges such as outdated irrigation systems and limited planning capacity.

Agriculture is a vital sector in Laos, employing approximately 67% of the workforce. However, it faces increasing vulnerability due to climate change, with frequent floods and droughts causing significant annual losses.
