The Port of Bilbao has reported a significant increase in cargo handling, marking the highest year-on-year growth since 2004. In the first half of 2026, the port managed 17,317,427 tons of cargo, which is an increase of 1,893,980 tons, or 12.3%, compared
to the same period last year. Despite initial setbacks due to severe storms in January and February, which caused a 9.5% decrease in cargo handling, the port rebounded strongly in the subsequent months. The growth is attributed to a balanced increase in both short-sea and deep-sea traffic, with imports rising by 14% and exports by 9%. The port's financial health is robust, with a turnover of USD$45.2 million, up 6.4% from the previous year, and substantial cash reserves to support ongoing investments.
