What's Happening?
The COP30 Presidency, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Cool Coalition, has launched the implementation phase of the Global Mutirão Against Extreme Heat initiative.
This effort aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable cooling and heat-resilience solutions in cities worldwide, translating the commitments of the Global Cooling Pledge into tangible actions. Currently, 185 cities and 72 nations have endorsed the pledge, which seeks to reduce cooling-related emissions by 68% by 2050. The initiative emphasizes the importance of sustainable cooling to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, which is a growing concern due to climate change. UNEP's report highlights that global cooling demand is expected to triple by 2050, necessitating environmentally sound solutions to prevent further climate impact and strain on power grids.
Why It's Important?
The initiative is crucial as extreme heat poses significant risks to public health, infrastructure, and economies. It is responsible for approximately half a million deaths annually and is projected to worsen. Sustainable cooling solutions are essential to protect vulnerable populations, including small farmers, women, and the elderly, from rising temperatures. The initiative also aims to save up to USD 43 trillion in avoided electricity and infrastructure costs by 2050. By treating access to cooling as essential infrastructure, similar to water and energy, the initiative seeks to ensure the continued functioning of economies, schools, and hospitals. The collaboration of 72 countries under the Global Cooling Pledge underscores the global commitment to addressing this urgent issue.
