What's Happening?
The UK has introduced RFAS Aviation, a scheme designed to verify the sustainability claims of aviation fuels. This initiative addresses the lack of a consistent approach to demonstrating the origin and emissions impact of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
The scheme extends the existing Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme from road transport to aviation, applying an audit and assurance framework aligned with UK emissions reporting requirements. A key feature is a standardized declaration recording data about fuels, including production pathways and lifecycle emissions, providing an auditable record for airlines and fuel suppliers. The scheme ensures that fuels used in other markets are not counted towards aviation emissions claims, enhancing traceability and sustainability reporting.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of RFAS Aviation is a significant step in the UK's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, a sector known for its substantial carbon footprint. By providing a reliable framework for verifying SAF claims, the scheme supports the UK's SAF Mandate, which aims to increase SAF usage to 22% of jet fuel demand by 2040. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the UK's target of cutting aviation emissions by up to 6.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2040. The scheme also addresses industry challenges related to traceability and reporting standards, fostering confidence among airlines, suppliers, and regulators in the sustainability of SAF.
