What's Happening?
The UNESCO REF Media Centre has published a new In-Depth and Special Report detailing the UNESCO REF Nigeria Police Youths Summit. This summit, convened in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, took place on August 12, 2024, coinciding with the United
Nations International Youth Day. The report examines the national conditions that led to the summit and the commitments made to young Nigerians during the event. Held at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja, the summit's theme was 'Enhancing the Nigerian Youth’s Value for National Security Intelligence.' Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Honourable Minister of Youth Development, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the summit, which also saw the attendance of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and representatives from other key national security bodies.
Why It's Important?
This report is significant as it documents a critical dialogue between Nigerian youth and the national security leadership, particularly against a backdrop of recent social unrest and economic challenges, including protests over fuel prices and food inflation. The summit aimed to foster reconciliation and partnership, treating young people as partners in national security rather than subjects. By addressing issues such as youth unemployment, education, and training, the initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to peace, justice, strong institutions, and decent work. The commitments made during the summit, if fulfilled, could lead to improved trust between law enforcement and youth, enhance national security through community engagement, and contribute to economic stability by empowering young Nigerians.
What's Next?
The UNESCO REF Media Centre's report serves as a public record of the commitments made during the summit, and it will track the fulfillment of these pledges. The report highlights indicators to watch, and the Media Centre plans to revise the file as each commitment becomes measurable. This ongoing monitoring will provide transparency and accountability regarding the promises made to young Nigerians. The dialogue initiated at the summit is expected to continue, potentially leading to further collaborative efforts between youth organizations, law enforcement, and government bodies to address youth-related issues and enhance national security. The report encourages policymakers, security and youth institutions, researchers, and journalists to engage with its findings to inform future actions.
Beyond the Headlines
The UNESCO REF Nigeria Police Youths Summit and its subsequent report delve into the deeper implications of youth engagement in national security. It challenges the traditional top-down approach to security by advocating for youth participation in decision-making, thereby promoting a more inclusive and representative governance model. The initiative also touches upon the ethical dimensions of policing and youth relations, emphasizing the importance of rights protection within police training. By fostering dialogue and partnership, the summit aims to build long-term trust and shared responsibility, which are crucial for sustainable peace and development. This approach could serve as a model for other nations facing similar challenges in integrating youth perspectives into critical national dialogues.
