What's Happening?
Cycling Without Age Marathon County is actively recruiting volunteers to provide free bike rides to community members using three-wheeled electric bikes, known as trishaws. The nonprofit, which started in 2019, aims to offer these rides to individuals
who may not be able to ride a bike independently. The organization currently operates five trishaws in the greater Wausau area. Volunteers, referred to as pilots, are responsible for taking up to two riders at a time through scenic community areas. Training sessions for new pilots are scheduled for May 1 and May 29, from 5-9 p.m. Interested individuals must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and be capable of pedaling an electric trishaw with passengers. The rides will be available from the first week of June through Labor Day, and can be scheduled through The Landing at the YMCA.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the growing trend of voluntourism, where individuals combine leisure activities with community service. By offering free rides, Cycling Without Age Marathon County not only promotes inclusivity and accessibility for those unable to ride bikes independently but also fosters community engagement and volunteerism. This program can significantly enhance the quality of life for participants, providing them with opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and social interactions. Additionally, it offers volunteers a meaningful way to contribute to their community, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other regions.
What's Next?
As the training sessions approach, the organization will likely focus on recruiting and preparing volunteers to ensure a successful season. Community members and local organizations may respond positively, potentially increasing demand for rides and volunteer participation. The success of this program could lead to its expansion, either in terms of the number of trishaws or the geographic area served. Stakeholders, including local government and community groups, might consider supporting or replicating this model to enhance community services.
