What's Happening?
The SunZia Transmission line, a significant clean energy project, is now operational, providing renewable electricity from New Mexico to the southwestern United States. This 550-mile high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line can transport up to 3,000 megawatts
of power from the SunZia Wind project, which features 916 turbines and a capacity of 3.65 gigawatts. The project is a collaboration between Pattern Energy and Hitachi Energy, marking a major milestone in U.S. grid infrastructure. The HVDC line is the largest voltage source converter-based installation in the U.S. and one of the largest globally. It is designed to efficiently move large amounts of wind power over long distances with minimal energy loss, addressing the increasing power demand driven by data centers, electrification, and industrial growth.
