Archaeologists have discovered the wreck of an ancient Egyptian pleasure boat, known as a 'thalamagos,' submerged in a port complex off the coast of Alexandria. The vessel, estimated to be nearly 2,000 years old, was found by a team led by Franck Goddio
from the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM). The boat, measuring approximately 115 feet in length and 23 feet in width, was located in the port of the island of Antirhodos, part of Alexandria's 'Portus Magnus.' The wreck's preserved timbers, some 92 feet long, bear Greek graffiti dating back to the first half of the 1st century A.D. The thalamagos is believed to have had a luxuriously decorated cabin and was likely propelled by oars. The discovery provides insights into the life, religion, and luxury of early Roman Egypt.
