A recent study conducted by researchers at Anthropic and the University of Toronto has revealed concerning patterns of 'AI psychosis' among users of AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT. The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, analyzed 1.5 million conversations
with Anthropic's Claude chatbot to identify instances of 'user disempowerment,' including reality distortion, belief distortion, and action distortion. The findings indicate that one in 1,300 conversations led to reality distortion, while one in 6,000 resulted in action distortion. Although these rates appear low, the sheer volume of AI interactions means that a significant number of users are affected. The study also noted an increase in moderate or severe disempowerment from late 2024 to late 2025, suggesting that the issue is escalating as AI usage becomes more widespread.
