Angelina Khalimendik, a 31-year-old mother of three from Hinsdale, died from drowning after saving her son in the Des Plaines River in Libertyville. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Independence Grove Forest Preserve. According to Lake County
Forest Preserves Police Chief Ron Davis, Khalimendik entered the river to assist her son, who was in distress. She successfully helped her son reach a family member but subsequently went underwater herself. Emergency services, including multiple fire departments with boats and divers, responded to a water rescue call around 7 p.m. Family members and bystanders pulled Khalimendik from the water, and paramedics performed CPR before transporting her to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
Why It's Important?
This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers of natural waterways, especially after periods of heavy rain. Lake County Forest Preserves Police Chief Ron Davis noted that recent heavy rainfall had led to high river levels and significant debris, including submerged trees and branches, making the river particularly hazardous. The incident serves as a somber reminder for the public to exercise extreme caution or avoid entering rivers and other natural bodies of water, particularly when conditions are adverse. It also underscores the profound selflessness and sacrifice of parents in protecting their children, as Khalimendik's actions ensured her son's survival at the cost of her own life. The community's outpouring of support for the family, including a GoFundMe campaign, reflects the deep impact of such a loss.
What's Next?
The Lake County Forest Preserves Police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the preliminary cause of death has been determined, further investigation may clarify any contributing factors. Authorities are likely to reiterate warnings about water safety, especially concerning the Des Plaines River's current conditions. The family of Angelina Khalimendik is facing significant emotional and financial challenges, with a GoFundMe campaign established to assist with funeral expenses and support her three young children. Community support will be crucial for the family as they navigate this profound loss and adjust to life without their mother.
Beyond the Headlines
This incident brings to the forefront broader discussions about public safety in recreational areas and the responsibility of individuals to assess environmental risks. Forest preserve authorities often issue warnings about dangerous conditions, but the allure of natural settings can sometimes lead to underestimation of risks. The tragedy may prompt local authorities to review and enhance safety signage, public awareness campaigns, or even consider temporary restrictions on water access during hazardous conditions. Furthermore, it underscores the emotional and psychological toll such events have on first responders, family members, and the wider community, highlighting the need for support systems for those affected by traumatic incidents.
