What's Happening?
The UK Government has set an ambitious target to achieve 8 gigawatts (GW) of community- and locally-owned clean energy capacity by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enable local communities to sustainably meet their power demands
and generate additional income. Currently, 614 community energy organizations across the UK have developed 411 megawatts (MW) of clean energy capacity, producing 575 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 213,000 households. This capacity includes 132MW from wind, 266MW from solar, and 13MW from hydropower. Despite these achievements, the sector faces significant barriers, such as high grid connection costs, lengthy waiting times for grid access, and insufficient funding, which have stalled an estimated 379MW of additional capacity. A new toolkit, developed by Community Energy Pathways with UK100 and Community Energy England, aims to foster stronger community-council partnerships to accelerate these projects. The toolkit provides practical resources, including decision-making templates and guidance on overcoming procurement and legal obstacles, to help councils and community groups collaborate more effectively.
