What's Happening?
Qatar's Baladna Food Industries is collaborating with the World Bank's International Finance Corp. (IFC) to support the dairy industry in Syria. The partnership aims to assess the potential for rebuilding a sustainable dairy value chain in Syria, focusing
on food security, rural livelihoods, and job creation. The project will evaluate milk production capacity, logistics bottlenecks, and compliance with environmental and social standards. Baladna and IFC will explore how small and medium-sized dairy farmers can be integrated into commercially viable supply chains.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is crucial for addressing food insecurity in Syria, one of the world's most food-insecure countries due to prolonged conflict. By rebuilding the dairy industry, the project aims to improve nutrition, create jobs, and deliver long-term economic value. The involvement of the private sector, represented by Baladna, highlights the importance of responsible investment in fragile markets. The project also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen food systems in conflict-affected regions.
