A new analysis by Climate Central, extending recent peer-reviewed research through 2025, reveals that human-caused sea level rise is responsible for approximately eight out of every ten days of coastal flooding across 71 U.S. locations. The frequency
of coastal flooding has more than tripled since the 2000s, reaching an average of 14 days per year during 2020-2025 in these same locations. This increase is attributed to rising sea levels, which are a direct consequence of a warming climate. Oceans have absorbed 90% of the excess heat from heat-trapping pollution, leading to thermal expansion of seawater and melting glaciers and ice sheets. Wilmington, NC, for instance, experiences 108 days of coastal flooding annually, with about 76% of these days directly linked to human-caused sea level rise. The analysis highlights that even under low-emissions scenarios, sea levels will continue to rise, posing ongoing risks to coastal communities.

Coastal areas, home to about 30% of the U.S. population, face heightened risks of damage to homes and infrastructure, disruption of supply chains, and health hazards from contamination and mold. For example, the port of Los Angeles, a major U.S. trade hub, experiences 15 days of coastal flooding annually, with 95% attributed to human-caused sea level rise. Transportation systems are also vulnerable, with projections indicating a tenfold increase in East Coast traffic delays due to high tide flooding by 2060. Furthermore, over 3,700 hazardous facilities along U.S. coastlines, including oil and gas wells and sewage treatment plants, are at risk of sea level rise-related flooding by 2050, posing environmental and public health threats.

The trajectory of coastal flooding suggests a continued increase in frequency and severity in the coming decades. Without rapid and sustained reductions in heat-trapping pollution, the impacts are expected to become more damaging. Coastal communities are encouraged to implement measures to reduce risk and enhance resilience, such as raising roads, stabilizing shorelines, relocating low-lying buildings, and restoring coastal ecosystems. The Interagency Sea Level Rise Scenario Tool from NASA and NOAA offers sea level rise projections through 2150 for various U.S. coastal regions, enabling communities to plan for future changes. Continued monitoring and adaptation strategies will be crucial to mitigate the escalating effects of human-caused sea level rise.
