What's Happening?
Alberta Pork representatives utilized the Calgary Stampede to engage with government leaders and industry partners, promoting the province's pork sector and discussing the Canada-Japan African Swine Fever (ASF) zoning agreement. Executive Director Darcy
Fitzgerald and Board Chair Alastair Bratton attended the Agri-business Reception hosted by Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Tara Sawyer. They met with federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald to express gratitude for the ASF zoning arrangement, which allows pork exports to Japan from ASF-free zones even if the disease is detected elsewhere in Canada. Japan is a significant market for Canadian pork, with exports valued at $1.8 billion in 2025. The agreement is part of Canada's ASF zoning arrangements with eight markets, representing 69% of Canada's pork export value.
Why It's Important?
The ASF zoning agreement with Japan is crucial for maintaining market access for Canadian pork producers in the event of an ASF outbreak. Japan is a major market, and the agreement helps protect the economic interests of Canadian pork producers by ensuring continued exports from ASF-free zones. This arrangement is part of a broader strategy to safeguard the pork industry against the global spread of ASF, which poses a serious threat to pig health and sector stability. The discussions at the Calgary Stampede highlight the importance of disease preparedness, export market access, and public trust in the pork industry, ensuring its visibility in policy discussions.
What's Next?
Alberta Pork will continue to advocate for the pork industry, focusing on disease preparedness, export market access, and other critical issues. The ASF zoning agreement with Japan is a step towards securing market stability, but ongoing efforts are needed to address challenges such as labor, processing capacity, and public trust. The Calgary Stampede serves as a platform for showcasing agriculture and engaging with consumers and industry audiences, promoting the versatility and importance of pork in meals.
