What's Happening?
The United States Mint has begun circulating the fourth in a series of five quarters commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The new 1776-2026 U.S. Constitution quarter features James Madison on the obverse and Independence Hall on the reverse.
This release is part of a series that includes quarters honoring the Mayflower Compact, Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, and the upcoming Gettysburg Address. The coins are being produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints and are distributed through the Federal Reserve Banks to commercial banks and financial institutions. The Mint started production in April, with 3 million coins struck by May.
Why It's Important?
The release of the U.S. Constitution quarter is significant as it marks a milestone in the nation's history, celebrating 250 years since the founding of the United States. This series of quarters not only serves as a tribute to key historical events and figures but also engages the public in a shared national heritage. The coins are expected to be popular among collectors and the general public, potentially increasing interest in numismatics and historical education. Additionally, the production and distribution of these coins highlight the ongoing role of the U.S. Mint in commemorating national history through currency.
What's Next?
The U.S. Mint plans to continue the release of the Semiquincentennial quarters, with the Gettysburg Address quarter scheduled for later in the year. Collectors will have the opportunity to purchase these coins in special rolls and bags starting August 26. The Mint will also introduce additional commemorative coins, including redesigned dimes and half dollars, as part of the 2026 celebrations. These releases are expected to maintain public interest and engagement with the nation's history and the Mint's commemorative programs.
