What's Happening?
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is constructing a $9 million trades center in Newport News, Virginia, aimed at preparing over 400 students annually for careers in maritime and construction
sectors. The 16,000-square-foot facility, which began construction in August 2025, is expected to be completed by February 2026. It will offer programs in welding, structural fitting, marine electrical, residential electrical, HVAC and plumbing, and facilities maintenance starting in March. This initiative is a collaboration between VPCC, the city, Newport News Economic Development Authority, and the U.S. Navy’s Maritime Industrial Base Program. The center is strategically located near Newport News Shipbuilding, a major employer in the region, and aims to address the significant demand for skilled trades workers.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the trades center is crucial for addressing the regional demand for skilled workers in the maritime industry, which is projected to require 40,000 new jobs over the next decade. By providing specialized training, the center will help fill this gap, supporting local economic growth and offering career opportunities to residents. The collaboration with the U.S. Navy and local authorities underscores the strategic importance of the maritime sector to national security and economic stability. Additionally, the center's focus on underserved communities highlights its role in promoting social equity and workforce development.
What's Next?
Upon completion, the trades center will begin enrolling students in its various programs, with courses designed to accommodate both beginners and those seeking to enhance their skills. The center is expected to become a key resource for Newport News Shipbuilding and its suppliers, providing a steady pipeline of skilled workers. As the programs roll out, there may be further collaborations with industry partners to expand training offerings and ensure alignment with evolving industry needs.
