What's Happening?
Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) has announced plans to introduce approximately 1,650 gigawatt-hours of new solar and wind power, aiming to reduce the state's reliance on oil. Currently, about 70% of Oʻahu's electricity is generated from petroleum. In
addition to renewable energy, HECO is exploring the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a transitional energy source. The utility has requested approval from the Public Utilities Commission for new fuel-based power projects, including a proposal from Japanese company JERA to build a 500 megawatt gas-fired plant on Oʻahu.
