A recent study involving over 2 million newborns in Sweden has found that infants who do not receive the routine prophylactic vitamin K shot at birth are at a significantly higher risk of bleeding. The research, published in JAMA Pediatrics, tracked babies
born between 2003 and 2021, revealing that those who skipped the vitamin K injection were 1.5 times more likely to experience bleeding within the first six months of life. The study also noted a nearly threefold increase in the risk of intracranial hemorrhage among these infants. Despite the benefits of the vitamin K shot, the rate of parents refusing it has more than doubled over the study period, rising from 0.66% in 2006 to 1.50% in 2021.
