What's Happening?
Leydah Sekgobela, a former teacher from Polokwane, South Africa, has successfully transitioned into farming, producing marrows, green beans, baby corn, tomatoes, and cherry peppers on her 9.2-hectare farm.
Her operation yields approximately 135 tonnes of produce annually, marketed through SPAR Rural Hub and other outlets. Sekgobela's journey from education to agriculture highlights her strategic career change, driven by her family background and passion for farming. Her success has been recognized by the Kagiso Trust’s Tyala Impact Fund, naming her the Most Improved Farmer of the Year in 2024.
Why It's Important?
Sekgobela's story is significant as it exemplifies the empowerment of women in agriculture, a sector traditionally dominated by men. Her achievements demonstrate the potential for small-scale farmers to compete with larger commercial operations, contributing to food security and economic development in rural areas. The partnership with SPAR provides a model for how corporate support can enhance the viability of emerging farmers, offering market access, financial assistance, and technical support. This case underscores the importance of inclusive agricultural policies and the role of women in transforming the sector.
