Fisk University has released a white paper detailing the academic advantages of its proposed on-campus data center. The document, titled “The Academic Benefit of a Data Center on the Campus of Fisk University,” describes a 100,000-square-foot, LEED-certified
facility that would include a 30,000-square-foot educational center with classrooms, computer labs, and collaborative spaces, alongside a 70,000-square-foot, 30-megawatt data center. Authored by Dr. Brian L. Nelms, Fisk’s provost and chief academic officer; Dr. La Tanya Rogers, dean of Humanities & Behavioral Social Sciences; and Dr. Bryan Kent Wallace, dean of the School of Graduate Studies, the paper also addresses environmental and community concerns. The university plans to lease the 70,000-square-foot data center space to external clients, who would serve as partners, offering internships and employment opportunities for students and the community. The facility would house a supercomputer for student and faculty research in fields such as computer science, data science, mathematics, biology, physics, business, social justice, and digital humanities, enabling advanced research like brain-image analysis, molecular simulations, cybersecurity encryption, natural language processing, and large language models.

The project will seek silver- or gold-level LEED certification, aiming to set a precedent for sustainable data center development.
