A 15-mile-wide pit discovered by amateur astronomer Joël Lapointe on Google Maps in 2024 has been confirmed as a 390 million-year-old meteor impact crater. The discovery was made in Quebec's Côte-Nord region, centered around Lake Marsal. Initial suspicions
about the pit's extraterrestrial origins were raised by French geophysicist Pierre Rochette, who noted the topography's suggestive nature. A team led by Gordon Osinski, a professor of planetary geology, conducted an on-site investigation in October 2025. They identified shatter cones and impact melt rock, both indicative of a meteor impact. The crater, now named Uhaachatik Crater, was confirmed after extensive testing of rock samples.
