What's Happening?
In 2025, Biglaw firms continued to play a significant role in pro bono work, despite challenges posed by the Trump administration. The American Lawyer's ranking of Am Law 200 firms highlights those that excelled in providing free legal services. The top
firms include Patterson Belknap Webb, Covington & Burling, and Jenner & Block, among others. These firms contributed to various causes, including immigration, racial justice, and reproductive rights. The average attorney at these firms performed over 100 hours of pro bono work, with the Am Law 200 collectively contributing 5.01 million hours. Although this is a decrease from previous years, the commitment to pro bono work remains strong, reflecting the legal community's dedication to social justice.
Why It's Important?
The continued emphasis on pro bono work by Biglaw firms underscores the legal profession's commitment to addressing societal issues, even in politically challenging times. These efforts provide critical support to marginalized communities and contribute to the protection of fundamental rights. The decrease in pro bono hours compared to previous years highlights the impact of political pressures and resource constraints. However, the resilience of these firms in maintaining their pro bono commitments demonstrates the importance of legal advocacy in promoting social justice. This work not only benefits those in need but also enhances the reputation and social responsibility of the legal profession.
