What's Happening?
A 19-year-old MBBS student from BJ Medical College, identified as Jiya Daki, died by suicide in her hostel room on her birthday. The incident occurred on a Monday afternoon when Jiya, a native of Keshod in Junagadh, chose not to attend college and stayed
back in her room. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan later that day. A three-page suicide note addressed to her mother was discovered, in which Jiya expressed feelings of failure and loneliness, apologizing for not being a 'good daughter.' She mentioned her struggles with making friends despite others' attempts to befriend her. The college dean, Meenakshi Parikh, did not respond to calls for comments.
Why It's Important?
This tragic event highlights the mental health challenges faced by students in high-pressure academic environments. The feelings of isolation and inadequacy expressed by Jiya in her note are not uncommon among students, particularly in competitive fields like medicine. This incident underscores the need for educational institutions to provide better mental health support and create an environment where students feel comfortable seeking help. It also raises awareness about the importance of addressing mental health issues proactively to prevent such tragedies.
