What's Happening?
Velu Govindan, a Principal Scientist and Wheat Breeder at CIMMYT, has been recognized with the 2025 Derek Tribe Award for his contributions to plant breeding and genetics. Govindan's work has led to the development of over two dozen climate-resilient,
zinc-enriched wheat varieties, benefiting farmers in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. His efforts are crucial in enhancing global food and nutrition security. Govindan is currently visiting Australia to deliver the Crawford Fund for Food Security's Derek Tribe Address and to strengthen collaborations with Australian agricultural centers.
Why It's Important?
Govindan's recognition underscores the critical role of scientific research in addressing global food security challenges. His work in developing biofortified wheat varieties addresses 'hidden hunger' by improving the nutritional quality of diets, particularly in regions heavily reliant on wheat as a staple food. The award highlights the importance of international collaboration in agricultural research and the potential for scientific advancements to have a significant impact on food security and nutrition worldwide. Govindan's achievements demonstrate the power of open science and shared learning in translating global genetic diversity into practical solutions for farmers.
