What's Happening?
Tulane University has been awarded a four-year, $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program. This grant is one of only nine such awards distributed nationwide and is intended to transform
academic research into practical solutions for public benefit. The funding will support the SMART (Success Model to Advance Research Translation) Tulane initiative, a university-wide effort aimed at moving faculty and student discoveries from the laboratory to new technologies, licensed products, startup companies, and high-wage careers in the Gulf South. According to Tulane President Michael A. Fitts, this initiative builds upon a decade of transformation, leveraging existing research talent and the Innovation Institute. The project seeks to establish systems, training, and a culture that connects these assets into a translational engine, ensuring discoveries reach the marketplace, create jobs, and strengthen the regional economy. The ART program, supported by the NSF’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, aims to advance U.S. scientific and economic leadership by expanding translational research ecosystems in higher education institutions across the nation.

This significant grant is crucial for addressing a common challenge in research universities located in under-resourced regions: the gap between world-class scientific discoveries and the infrastructure needed to bring them to market. By fostering a robust research translation ecosystem, SMART Tulane is expected to generate well-paying jobs, with median salaries projected at $80,000, nearly triple the regional median income. This initiative will not only boost the local economy in New Orleans and Louisiana but also serve as a model for other institutions in similar regions. The focus on commercialization and startup formation will contribute to the U.S.'s overall scientific and economic leadership by ensuring that groundbreaking research translates into tangible societal and economic benefits. The partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology, a leader in technology commercialization, will further enhance Tulane's capacity to adapt and implement proven practices, thereby strengthening the national research translation landscape.
What's Next?
SMART Tulane plans to certify over 120 research translation leaders, known as ART Ambassadors, across all nine of Tulane’s schools, creating a network of faculty dedicated to guiding discoveries from concept to deployment. Additionally, 152 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers will receive hands-on translational training through fellowships, Seed Translational Research Projects, I-Corps programming, and the Tulane University Innovation Institute’s Founder Lab. This training will cover essential skills such as customer discovery, intellectual property strategy, market assessment, and venture formation. By year four, the initiative aims to support 12 or more startup formations annually, more than doubling the current rate. A distinctive feature of SMART Tulane will be the development of AI-enabled tools to identify market opportunities, scout intellectual property, and match Tulane innovations with potential industry partners. The practices and strategies developed through this initiative will be shared with peer institutions, particularly those in under-resourced regions, to broaden the impact of a stronger national research translation ecosystem.
