What's Happening?
The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) are organizing a series of Local Food Producer Workshops across Kansas. These workshops aim to support farmers' market vendors and managers, as well as individuals interested
in selling food products directly to consumers. The workshops will cover various topics, including marketing strategies, food safety, regulations on selling meat, eggs, and poultry, and sales tax for vendors. Additionally, the workshops will offer free scale certification for attendees. The initiative is part of the Kansas Ag Growth Strategy, which focuses on enhancing the economic growth of the agriculture industry in Kansas.
Why It's Important?
These workshops are crucial for strengthening local food systems and supporting small-scale farmers and vendors. By providing education on food safety and marketing, the workshops aim to enhance the success of local businesses and stimulate the local economy. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and support the specialty crop sector in Kansas. As farmers' markets play a vital role in providing fresh food and supporting local economies, these workshops could have a significant impact on the agricultural landscape in Kansas.
What's Next?
The workshops are scheduled to take place at various locations across Kansas, with registration now open. Participants can register for a fee of $25, and more information is available on the From the Land of Kansas website. The workshops are funded by the Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops and the Kansas Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. As the workshops progress, they are expected to provide valuable insights and resources to local food producers, potentially leading to increased participation in farmers' markets and direct-to-consumer sales.
