What's Happening?
NASA is advancing lunar exploration with the development of the ECLIPSE system, a novel thermal management solution for lunar operations. The system utilizes a Variable Thermal Conductivity Metamaterial (VTCM) to regulate temperature passively, enabling
small devices to withstand the harsh lunar environment without external power. The metamaterial adjusts its thermal conductivity based on temperature changes, using internal mechanical contact to manage energy flow. This innovation aims to support mobile autonomous surveyors in conducting extended lunar missions while minimizing size, weight, power, and cost.
