What's Happening?
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs in India has officially recognized the New Development Bank (NDB) as a specified financial institution under the Companies Act, 2013. This recognition, effective from June 16, 2026, aligns India's regulatory framework
with the BRICS multilateral lending institution. The NDB, established by the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—aims to support sustainable investment and adhere to corporate governance standards. The notification emphasizes the bank's role in risk management, policy strategy, and compliance with governance standards.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of the NDB as a specified financial institution under the Companies Act is significant for India's financial and regulatory landscape. It aligns India's statutory framework with international multilateral lending practices, potentially enhancing the country's attractiveness to foreign investors. This move could facilitate greater investment flows into sustainable projects, thereby supporting India's economic growth and development goals. The recognition also underscores India's commitment to international cooperation within the BRICS framework, which could strengthen its geopolitical and economic ties with other member countries.
