What's Happening?
The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit has chosen 3ME Technology, an Australian battery and electrification company, to demonstrate its EdgeVOLT portable battery system. This system is designed to provide power for military equipment in challenging field conditions.
The demonstration falls under the Portable Resilient Integrated Storage Module (PRISM) program, which aims to develop deployable power systems that can support defense operations without heavy reliance on traditional fuel-based generators. The EdgeVOLT system is rugged and modular, intended to power communications equipment, sensors, field infrastructure, and autonomous platforms. A key feature is its cold-weather variant, which incorporates battery cells from South 8 Technologies. These LiGas cells are engineered to operate across an extreme temperature range of -76°F to 140°F, addressing a critical challenge for portable power systems in diverse military environments.
