What's Happening?
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, has announced a call for proposals under the Himalayan Bio-resource Mission Programme, targeting the North Eastern Region (NER)
of India. This initiative aims to harness the region's biodiversity, spanning tropical to alpine ecosystems, to enhance agricultural productivity and create sustainable livelihoods. The program focuses on translational projects that integrate modern biotechnology with traditional knowledge, covering areas such as plant and agricultural resources, insect and animal resources, medicinal plants, microbial resources, and environmental sciences. The call is open to scientists and researchers from recognized institutions, with a requirement for collaboration with NER institutions.
Why It's Important?
This initiative represents a significant opportunity to leverage the unique biodiversity of the Himalayas for scientific and societal benefits. By focusing on the NER, the program aims to address regional challenges and promote sustainable development through biotechnology. The emphasis on 'lab-to-land' research highlights the potential for scientific advancements to directly impact local communities, improving livelihoods and conserving biodiversity. The program also encourages collaboration between regional and national scientists, fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building in biotechnology.
