What's Happening?
The eaglets of the famous bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow, residing in Big Bear Valley, California, have been named Sandy and Luna. The names were chosen through a public contest organized by the Friends
of Big Bear Valley, with the final selection made by third-grade students. The naming contest received over 3,000 submissions, and the names were selected randomly before being voted on by the students. The eaglets, previously referred to as Chick 1 and Chick 2, hatched in early April and have been observed via an eagle cam set up by the nonprofit organization.
Why It's Important?
The naming of the eaglets is a community-driven initiative that engages the public, particularly young students, in wildlife conservation efforts. It fosters a sense of connection and responsibility towards local wildlife, encouraging educational opportunities about bald eagles and their habitats. The event also honors Sandy Steers, the late executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, by naming one of the eaglets after her, highlighting her contributions to conservation. This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement in conservation and the role of educational programs in promoting environmental stewardship.
