The King County Library System (KCLS) has launched a new central materials sorting facility in Renton, Washington, featuring what is believed to be the largest library materials sorting system in North America. This $5.2 million installation from Lyngsoe
Systems includes two robotic arms and is designed to process the 25,000 items that circulate daily through KCLS's 50 libraries. The new system replaces a 20-year-old sorter that frequently experienced breakdowns, causing delays. The facility, which opened in June, serves as a central hub for moving materials across the library system, which serves 1.6 million King County residents and manages a collection of 2.7 million items. This upgrade aims to significantly improve the speed and reliability of delivering books, movies, music, and other materials to patrons.
