Joint research by Sleep Cycle, an AI sleep technology company, and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has revealed that passively collected nocturnal cough data can provide an early warning signal for influenza and COVID-19 activity. The study, which
analyzed three years of aggregated, anonymized cough data from the Sleep Cycle app, found a consistent relationship between increases in coughing and subsequent rises in respiratory illness. Specifically, population-normalized cough metrics showed a lead time of approximately one week for both influenza and COVID-19 surveillance indicators. This digital health signal is generated automatically during normal sleep, offering a near real-time view of respiratory illness activity without being affected by healthcare-seeking behavior, laboratory turnaround times, or reporting delays inherent in traditional surveillance methods. The strongest correlation was observed between Sleep Cycle’s nightly cough data and NHS 111 Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) triage calls across England.
