What's Happening?
The United Nations Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries (UNTB) is inviting applications for its Agriculture Expert Consultant Roster. This remote opportunity aims to create a searchable pool of qualified specialists for future technical assignments
supporting agricultural innovation, technology transfer, research, policy development, and sustainable food systems in least developed countries (LDCs). The roster will help UNTB identify experts to assist governments and development partners with specific technical needs. While most assignments are home-based, travel may be required. Inclusion in the roster, which will be active for four years, does not guarantee employment but provides a pathway for engagement with UNTB initiatives.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for strengthening agricultural capacities in LDCs, which often face significant challenges in food security, climate resilience, and technological adoption. By connecting these countries with experienced agricultural professionals, UNTB aims to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology, leading to improved agricultural productivity and sustainable practices. For U.S. agricultural experts, this offers a unique opportunity to contribute to global development efforts, applying their expertise to address critical issues like water management, digital agriculture, crop production, and post-harvest management in vulnerable regions. The focus on remote work also expands the accessibility of these opportunities to a wider pool of professionals, fostering international collaboration and knowledge sharing.
What's Next?
Interested professionals must complete an online application by October 28, 2026, providing detailed responses on their technical domains, functional areas, and relevant experience. Successful applicants will be included in the roster for four years. When suitable assignments arise, UNTB will contact relevant experts with specific terms of reference. This process will facilitate the deployment of specialized knowledge to LDCs, supporting their national development priorities. The initiative is expected to enhance the capacity of LDC governments, research institutions, and farmers' organizations to adopt and adapt agricultural technologies, ultimately contributing to improved food systems and rural economic growth.
Beyond the Headlines
This UNTB initiative underscores the critical role of technology and expertise in addressing global challenges like food insecurity and climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable nations. It highlights the growing trend of remote work in international development, allowing for a more flexible and inclusive approach to talent acquisition. The roster's focus on diverse technical areas, from agricultural water management to digital agriculture and sustainable farming systems, reflects a holistic understanding of modern agricultural development. Furthermore, by fostering South-South and triangular cooperation, the program aims to build self-reliance and shared learning among developing countries, moving beyond traditional aid models towards more collaborative and sustainable solutions. This effort also implicitly acknowledges the ethical imperative to support LDCs in achieving their Sustainable Development Goals.
