The Duneland Family YMCA in Chesterton is creating a music room named the Ty Balon Creative Exchange + Sound Studio to honor Ty Balon, a young man who passed away at 25 due to epilepsy. Balon, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at 11, used music as a form
of expression and comfort throughout his life. His mother, Crystal Soliday, has been involved with the YMCA and saw the opportunity to honor her son when the YMCA's CEO, Dave Kasarda, mentioned plans for a music room. The studio will be located in a 1,000-square-foot space that was formerly a biology classroom. It will feature a recording studio, computers, and a stage, providing a sanctuary for youth to express themselves musically. The project aims to open next year, with donations being accepted to support its development.
