A former South Carolina prison guard, Lowanda Atkinson, along with four co-defendants, has pleaded guilty in federal court to a $550,000 bribery scheme. Atkinson, who worked as a corrections officer for 16 years, accepted bribes from inmates at Lee Correctional
Institution and their family members. The inmates, Larry Williamson and Jason Brown, received contraband such as cellphones, tobacco products, and controlled substances in exchange for the bribes. This contraband was then sold to other inmates, with profits split among Atkinson, Williamson, and Brown. The U.S. District Attorney's Office of South Carolina has charged Williamson in a separate indictment. Each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison. The case was investigated by the FBI Columbia Field Office and the South Carolina Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General.
