What's Happening?
Chris Vaughan, a semi-retired astronomer from Collingwood, has been sharing his passion for astronomy through a weekly summary called Astronomy Skylights for the past 12 years. Vaughan, who began his career in astrophysics, transitioned to geophysics
due to limited opportunities in his field. Despite this, he maintained his interest in astronomy, joining The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and volunteering at the David Dunlap Observatory. Vaughan's Astronomy Skylights, which includes reports on celestial events and space station flyovers, is published on his website and shared via email and social media. He also contributes to a stargazing app and a monthly calendar for space.com. Vaughan's interest in astronomy led him to partner with a company selling portable planetariums, which he now uses to educate students and communities in Ontario.
Why It's Important?
Vaughan's efforts highlight the importance of community engagement in science education. By making astronomy accessible and engaging, he fosters a greater public interest in the sciences. His work with portable planetariums and educational outreach in schools provides students with hands-on learning experiences, potentially inspiring future generations of scientists. Vaughan's initiatives also demonstrate how retired professionals can continue to contribute to their fields and communities, leveraging their expertise and passion to educate and inspire others.
