What's Happening?
The National Library Board (NLB) in Singapore has been working to rekindle the joy of reading among Singaporeans post-pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, reading levels surged as people turned to books while confined at home. However, post-pandemic,
reading frequency has returned to pre-pandemic levels, with fewer people finding reading enjoyable or relaxing. The NLB has launched initiatives like the 'Worlds Within' experience, a multi-sensory journey designed to reconnect visitors with their imagination and the written word. This initiative aims to combat the decline in reading by engaging the senses and encouraging people to rediscover the joy of storytelling.
Why It's Important?
The decline in reading habits post-pandemic highlights a broader cultural shift towards short-form content and instant gratification, which has impacted attention spans and the ability to enjoy longer, more immersive activities like reading. The NLB's efforts are significant as they address this cultural shift by creating engaging experiences that encourage people to reconnect with reading. This initiative not only supports the cultural and intellectual growth of individuals but also reinforces the importance of libraries as community hubs for learning and imagination.
