What's Happening?
Grenergy, a Spanish multinational clean energy producer, has launched a reverse auction in Chile for the sale of 1.5 TWh per year of energy. This energy will be sourced from various solar and storage plants owned by the company in the northern and central
regions of Chile. The auction, managed through its subsidiary GR Power, targets generators, retailers, and large consumers seeking competitive energy supply. The auction includes 960 GWh/year of battery-stored energy for nighttime use and 540 GWh of solar photovoltaic generation, with supply scheduled between the second and third quarters of 2028. Participants can bid for the full volume or parts of it, with contract tenors ranging from 6 to 15 years. Applications are open until July 22, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This auction represents a significant step in Chile's energy transition, emphasizing the country's commitment to renewable energy. By facilitating access to clean, stable energy at competitive prices, Grenergy's initiative supports Chile's goal of increasing its renewable energy capacity. The auction also highlights the growing importance of energy storage solutions in balancing supply and demand, particularly during nighttime periods. For Grenergy, this move strengthens its position as a leading foreign investor in Chile's energy sector and showcases its innovative approach to integrating solar and storage technologies.
What's Next?
Grenergy plans to expand its renewable energy auction model to Europe, further solidifying its role in the global energy transition. In Chile, the company will continue to develop its Oasis Atacama and Oasis Central platforms, which combine solar capacity with energy storage. These efforts are expected to enhance Chile's energy infrastructure and provide a blueprint for similar projects worldwide. Stakeholders, including government agencies and energy companies, will likely monitor the auction's outcomes to assess its impact on energy prices and supply stability.
