What's Happening?
The city of Albuquerque is undergoing a leadership transition within its Department of Technology and Innovation (DTI). A search has been initiated for a permanent director to lead the department, which is responsible for overseeing municipal technology
operations. Saif Ismail is currently serving as the acting director, following the tenure of Mark Leech, who had been in the role since April 3, 2023. The job posting for the permanent director position was recently made public on LinkedIn. The new director will be tasked with providing executive leadership, managing citywide technology services, cybersecurity resources, strategic planning, budget development, and departmental operations. The recruitment post does not clarify if the new director will also hold the title of chief information officer. The transition follows the retirement of Brian Osterloh, who served as director for about five years. Mark Leech, before becoming director, was the deputy director for over three years and had a long career with the city, including overseeing the open data program and the Albuquerque Police Department’s technical services division.
Why It's Important?
This leadership transition is significant as it comes at a time when technology plays a crucial role in municipal operations and public services. The Department of Technology and Innovation is pivotal in supporting Albuquerque's city operations, including the 311 Community Contact Center, the broadband office, and neighborhood Wi-Fi initiatives. The new director will influence how technology is leveraged to improve city services and address cybersecurity challenges. This change in leadership could impact the strategic direction of the department, potentially affecting how technology resources are allocated and prioritized. The outcome of this transition will be closely watched by stakeholders who rely on the department's services, including city officials, businesses, and residents who benefit from improved technological infrastructure and services.
What's Next?
The city will continue its search for a qualified candidate to fill the permanent director position. Once appointed, the new director will need to quickly adapt to the department's ongoing projects and initiatives. They will also be expected to develop and implement strategies that align with the city's technological goals and address any existing challenges. Stakeholders, including city officials and community members, will likely be interested in the new director's vision for the department and how they plan to enhance technology services in Albuquerque. The transition period may also involve adjustments in departmental operations and priorities as the new leadership takes charge.
