What's Happening?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and The MITRE Corporation have announced a $20 million project to establish two new research centers focused on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
One center will address advanced manufacturing, while the AI Economic Security Center will focus on protecting U.S. critical infrastructure from AI-enabled threats. This initiative is part of a broader federal investment in AI research, aiming to enhance U.S. dominance in AI innovation and address cybersecurity challenges.
Why It's Important?
This research effort is significant for bolstering the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure sectors such as water, electricity, and internet services. By developing AI-driven tools, the centers aim to mitigate risks from adversaries' use of AI and enhance the resilience of U.S. industries. The initiative reflects a strategic shift towards prioritizing American competitiveness in AI, particularly in the face of global challenges. It underscores the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and academia to drive innovation and protect national security interests.
