What's Happening?
The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) is raising awareness and funds to protect the habitat of bald eagles Jackie and Shadow, who are raising their newest chicks. The nonprofit operates a live-stream camera that captures the eagles' daily activities,
drawing global attention. However, a $10 million conservation effort is needed to purchase the surrounding area known as Moon Camp to prevent development plans that include housing and marina slips. The deadline for the purchase is July 31, and if unsuccessful, the development could threaten the eagles' natural habitat.
Why It's Important?
The conservation effort is crucial for maintaining the natural habitat of bald eagles in Big Bear Valley, which has seen a decline in eagle populations over the years. The live-stream camera not only engages viewers but also serves as a tool to raise awareness about the importance of preserving wildlife habitats. The potential development poses a significant threat to the eagles and other wildlife, highlighting the need for immediate action to secure the land. Successful conservation could ensure the continued presence of bald eagles in the area, supporting biodiversity and ecological balance.
