The South Dakota National Guard's Adjutant Gen. Mark Morrell announced the deployment of approximately 120 soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border for a year. This deployment, requested by the federal government, marks the state's seventh border deployment since
2021. The soldiers, from the 155th Engineer Company, were honored at an activation ceremony in Wagner Community School. The unit will operate under the direction of U.S. Northern Command and will provide logistical and personnel support in partnership with U.S. Border Patrol. Family members, community members, and students attended the ceremony, which included the reading of the unit's mobilization order and a roll call of each deploying soldier. Governor Larry Rhoden, U.S. Senator John Thune, and U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson also spoke at the event.
