What's Happening?
The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has announced its final decision to allow the rollout of direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services across the country. This decision follows a consultation on enabling
standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites using mobile spectrum bands below 3GHz. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, particularly in remote and rural areas, by allowing mobile and satellite operators to collaborate under specific technical conditions. Ofcom's decision positions the UK as a leader in Western Europe for D2D services, with plans already in place by Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone Group to launch services in partnership with Starlink and AST SpaceMobile, respectively. The technology will utilize existing mobile bands, making it accessible on most 4G and 5G smartphones.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of D2D satellite services in the UK is a significant step towards improving mobile connectivity, especially in areas that are traditionally underserved by conventional mobile networks. This development is expected to unlock new opportunities for businesses and communities by providing reliable communication options in remote locations. The move also reflects a broader trend of integrating satellite technology with mobile networks, which could lead to increased competition and innovation in the telecommunications sector. As more countries and operators adopt D2D services, the global landscape of mobile connectivity is likely to shift, potentially reducing the digital divide and fostering economic growth.
What's Next?
With Ofcom's approval, mobile operators in the UK are expected to begin implementing D2D services, with Virgin Media O2 planning to launch its O2 Satellite service in early 2026. This service will initially offer messaging and data capabilities. Meanwhile, AST SpaceMobile is preparing to deliver intermittent nationwide service in selected markets. As these services roll out, other European countries are likely to follow suit, with France's Orange already planning a D2D launch. The Global mobile Suppliers Association anticipates an increase in partnerships between mobile and satellite providers, which could accelerate the adoption of D2D technology across Europe and beyond.
