What's Happening?
Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) has finalized a contract to sell the former Southside Technical Center located at 1800 Harrodsburg Road for $5.5 million. The buyer is Local 452 - Plumbers & Pipefitters, a local labor union. This decision was announced
by Tranzon Asset Advisors and Schrader Commercial Properties. The Southside Technical Center, which was originally built in 1976, ceased operations in 2025 when FCPS consolidated its technical education programs at The Hub for Innovative Learning and Leadership. The sale price exceeded the appraised value determined by an independent appraisal firm in 2025. The union plans to use the facility for training trade craftsmen, similar to its previous function. The sale is pending final approval from the Kentucky Department of Education. Additionally, the union will seek a zoning change to continue using the facility for educational purposes, although this is not a condition of the sale.
Why It's Important?
The sale of the Southside Technical Center represents a significant development for both the Fayette County Public Schools and the local labor union. For FCPS, the transaction provides a financial boost, potentially aiding in funding other educational initiatives or infrastructure projects. For the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, acquiring the facility allows for the continuation and expansion of vocational training programs, which are crucial for developing skilled labor in the region. This move could enhance workforce development, addressing local labor market needs and supporting economic growth. The transaction also reflects a strategic use of public assets, ensuring that the facility continues to serve educational purposes, benefiting the community and local economy.
What's Next?
The next steps involve obtaining final approval from the Kentucky Department of Education, which is necessary to complete the sale. The union will also pursue a zoning change to facilitate the continued use of the facility for training purposes. This process may involve negotiations with local government entities to align the facility's use with zoning regulations. Stakeholders, including the local community and educational authorities, will likely monitor these developments closely, as they could impact local education and labor markets. The successful completion of these steps will determine the timeline for the union to begin operations at the facility.
