Rajesh Gopakumar, who topped the IIT-JEE in 1987, chose to pursue Physics over the more conventional path of Computer Science. His decision led to significant contributions in theoretical physics, including the Gopakumar-Vafa Duality, which has become
a cornerstone in string theory and mathematical physics. Gopakumar's journey took him from IIT Kanpur to Princeton University, where he worked under Nobel laureate David Gross. He later collaborated with Cumrun Vafa at Harvard University, leading to groundbreaking discoveries. Despite opportunities abroad, Gopakumar returned to India, contributing to the Harish-Chandra Research Institute and later leading the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize.
