What's Happening?
VINCI Airports has successfully completed the first phase of its modernization program in Cape Verde, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the country's airport infrastructure. This phase, which involved an €80 million investment, focused on improving
capacity, efficiency, and sustainability across several airports. Key upgrades included runway renovations, terminal modernizations, and the installation of solar power plants and advanced IT systems. The completion of this phase was celebrated in a ceremony attended by Cape Verde's Prime Minister José Ulisses Correia e Silva and other officials. Following this, VINCI Airports has launched a new €142 million expansion phase aimed at further boosting connectivity and sustainable operations. This next phase will include terminal expansions, new commercial areas, and additional environmental improvements.
Why It's Important?
The modernization and expansion of Cape Verde's airports are crucial for boosting the country's connectivity and economic growth. By increasing passenger capacity and improving infrastructure, VINCI Airports is enhancing the tourism sector, which is a vital part of Cape Verde's economy. The introduction of new air routes and the attraction of low-cost carriers have already led to a 60% increase in passenger traffic from 2022 to 2025. This growth not only supports the tourism industry but also benefits the Cape Verdean diaspora by improving mobility. Furthermore, the focus on sustainability, such as the installation of solar power plants, aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally friendly practices in aviation.
What's Next?
The next phase of the project, Phase 1B, will continue over the next three years with a €142 million investment. This phase will focus on expanding terminals, creating new commercial areas, and extending runways, particularly at Boa Vista airport. Additional improvements will include waste treatment and wastewater processing facilities. The project is supported by a public-private partnership model, ensuring long-term investment stability. As these developments progress, they are expected to further enhance Cape Verde's position as a key player in the aviation sector, potentially attracting more international airlines and increasing its global connectivity.
