Recent research conducted by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC has revealed that leading AI assistants frequently misrepresent news content. The study analyzed 3,000 responses from AI assistants,
including ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity, across 14 languages. It found that 45% of these responses contained significant issues, with 81% having some form of problem. A third of the responses showed serious sourcing errors, such as missing, misleading, or incorrect attribution. Notably, Gemini, Google's AI assistant, had significant sourcing issues in 72% of its responses, compared to below 25% for other assistants. The study highlighted examples like Gemini incorrectly stating changes to a law on disposable vapes and ChatGPT reporting Pope Francis as the current Pope months after his death. The findings raise concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI assistants in delivering news content.
