What's Happening?
A team of researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), in partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS), is currently on an expedition to survey the shipwrecks of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Quest and Captain Robert
Falcon Scott's Terra Nova. This mission, described as a "once-in-a-generation" event, aims to capture and document images of the wrecks to create 3D replicas. The Quest, a 125-tonne motor-sailing steamship, was Shackleton's last expedition vessel and was rediscovered in 2024 at a depth of 390 meters off Newfoundland and Labrador. Shackleton died aboard the Quest in 1922. The Terra Nova, which carried Captain Scott on his ill-fated South Pole expedition in 1912, was discovered in 2012 at a depth of 300 meters off Greenland and sank in 1943 while supplying U.S. bases during World War II. A significant part of the expedition involved a dive by WHOI's human-occupied submersible Alvin to the Quest wreck, marking the first time humans have visited it. This mission is also Alvin's first since receiving U.S. Navy certification after an overhaul, allowing it to resume dives to 6,500 meters.
